City & Guilds
A global leader in skills education, City & Guilds Group helps people get into a job, progress in their career, and move onto the next challenge. City & Guilds offers more than 500 qualifications over the whole range of industry sectors through 8500 colleges and training providers in 81 countries worldwide. Two million people every year start City & Guilds qualifications, which span all levels from basic skills to the highest standards of professional achievement (Honours, Master and Doctorate levels equivalent).
Founded in 1878 by the City of London and 16 livery companies – the traditional guardians of work-based training – to develop a national system of technical education, City & Guilds has been operating under Royal Charter (RC117), granted by Queen Victoria, since 1900. The Prince of Wales later King Edward VII was then appointed the first President of the Institute.
City & Guilds is a registered charity (no. 312832). The Institute’s president is now HRH The Princess Royal who accepted this role in June 2011 (following her father HRH The Duke of Edinburgh who held the position for nearly 60 years), and the current Chairman of Council is Michael Howell. The Chairman Sir John Armitt, took office in November 2012.
Institute of Leadership & Management
The ILM plays a part in approving many leadership courses and accrediting centres − ILM is an institution that is widely recognised by employers and education throughout the UK.
ILM qualifications are practically based, designed to complement the individual’s role at work. Aligned to the UK’s Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), ILM qualifications begin at level 2, such as the ILM Award in Team Leading, and continue up to level 7, such as the ILM Diploma in Strategic Leadership and Executive Management.
ILM also offers NVQs; these include the Level 5 NVQ in Management. Other specialist qualifications cover skills in volunteer management, business start-up, coaching, and personnel management. All ILM qualifications have been accredited by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual).
Five grades of membership entitle the member to use post-nominal letters – Affiliate (AInstLM), Associate Member (AMInstLM), Member (MInstLM), Fellow (FInstLM) and Companion (CInstLM). The highest grade is Companionship — for senior executives selected by the Institute.
Members receive a wide range of services to help with their Continuous Professional Development (CPD) including access to e-books, e-courses, events, and specialist management help.

NCFE is recognised as an Awarding Organisation by the qualification regulators (‘regulators’) for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
